My rating is 3.5 stars.

With A Man of His Give-and-take, Dave Duncan produces a sprawling ballsy, which uses the familiar tropes of classic fantasy to effortlessly ensnare readers in the familiar story of a gifted, stable boy and a willful, skilled princess. No, the author doesn't revolutionize the genre, or even effort to subvert it, but, rather, he takes the normal building blocks of epic fantasy and uses them to create a fresh, exciting tale all his own.

Rap and Princess Inosolan grow up on the great rock of Krasengar, far to the north in the world of Pandemia, where surviving the arctic winters and maintaining their way of life keeps the people from care too much about the goings on in the greater world. As these 2 children grow to maturity they become fast friends, as close as 2 people could be; but when they both enter the edge of adulthood does their bond begin to fray, equally deeper feelings for one another grow, yet can't be acted upon past either.

Naturally, Rap and Inosolan's elementary life becomes complicated by events which pull them into the greater world. The spunky princess getting into all sorts of deep trouble, while Rap doggedly travels the world, braves dangers, and uncovers unexpected skills to save his friend. (Not to say that Inosolan is a damsel waiting to exist rescued, because she is it non, merely that doesn't hateful Rap's assist isn't of good use to her.) All of the daring adventures of the ii friends leading to a terminal conclusion which (though expected) is still well washed and quite fulfilling.

While many aren't familiar with Dave Duncan'due south works, I've e'er been a fan of his fantasy offerings. Series like The Seventh Sword and A Handful of Men (sequel to A Man of His Word) especially annotation worthy; the author combining a more than mature and realistic await at life with the hopeful, escapist tone of Tolkien-esque fantasy. Duncan always able to invoke laughs and smiles, grimaces and daze without making the story a bloody, horrific, depressing grimdark mess.

What really pulled me into this detail narrative was the worldbuilding and the main characters. This world of Pandemia populated by the tried-and-true fantasy races with a creative magic organisation; the commoner-princess trope put to good use, equally the story of Rap and Inosolan slowly ensnares y'all, making you lot care about these two youths, then the greater story whisks them (and you the reader) away on an exciting journeying of discovery across the globe, where absurd people popular up all along the way.

As for any real criticism, all I can say is that this is classic fantasy. Duncan doesn't discard the normal tropes but embraces them, uses them in his ain way to create an exciting chance tale which isn't dark, cynical, pessimistic or nihilistic but the exact opposite. And those lighter, more optimistic qualities might plough some readers off, those who prefer their fantasy to be in the mold of George R.R. Martin, Joe Abercrombie, and others. Besides this possible issue though, in that location really isn't annihilation negative I could listing about this series.

A Man of His Word is quite frankly a return to a brighter, more optimistic fourth dimension in fantasy literature. An era where people wanted the "proficient" guys to triumph, the "bad" guys to get what they deserved, and for the weary heroes to somehow, someway have the possibility to live happily always after. And if you are a reader weary of the grimdark of today who wishes to (re)find the fun fantasy of yesteryear, I'd encourage you to pick up A Man of His Discussion; it might non reinvent the genre or subvert any tropes, merely it will brand y'all express mirth, smile, and forget the screwed upwards world we live in for more than a few hours.

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review. I'd like to give thanks them for allowing me to receive this review copy and inform anybody that the review y'all take read is my opinion lone.

iv.v/5 STARS:  **This is an honest, unbiased review.  I would like to thank the author and/or/publisher for providing an ARC through Netgalley, all opinions are mine.**
I idea that it started tiresome merely I kept reading because I usually love this authors novels and I am glad I did considering one time again he has done a wonderful job with world building, mixing Vikings, magic and different creatures in this amazing series.  The magic system is unusual, the protagonist and heroine are astonishing and all the other characters are then well-fatigued you actually feel like you are in that location.

Despite being told by the gods to "trust in love" Inos makes mistakes because she believes that it must exist someone of her course and station that she is to find love with.  Nonetheless, most of the readers aren't that blind and we know that the gods meant Rap and we simply wonder how much hardship they will suffer before she realizes that she never had to leave the kingdom to find that person and that he volition practise anything, no matter how dangerous to ensure that she becomes the queen he knows she can be.

Read

I had read something by this writer a long time ago and liked his writing so I got this four volume series. I loved the hero, Rap. He was and so loyal, clever and unassuming. His cohorts--ha! Little Chicken, the goblin, is hilarious and scary at the same fourth dimension. And the Sequential, sometimes you wanted them dead, other times y'all were glad they were effectually. Almost clever and original character building in that one, or should I say five? And the magic is based on whispered words. Be careful who you lot tell! The heroine took some time to abound on me. Pampered Princesses don't always see the best thing in forepart of them. Lots of travel kept this from v stars. But don't let that keep yous from reading. Well worth your time. I would recommend this author.

    Surprisingly good!

I almost didn't buy this series because the description talked a lot about thwarted beloved and I thought that theme would clothing thin before four books were even close to finished. Merely the characters were delightful and original plot twists drew me in. The writing was excellent.

An intriguing story woven from familiar tropes and some very novel characters. I loved the goblins, gnomes (well... the descriptions of the kids were nauseating merely still great writing), the slaves, the djinn. I liked how the characters made unusual choices, and that there were rules to the magic.

I think this would mayhap accept appealed better if I hadn't read the complete series in one go. The travels began to seem endless. The individual stories are good, only taken every bit a set in a single serving I found myself repeatedly checking how much more there was to read. That said, I quite liked the ending, both major twists. I would have liked to have seen more than of Shandie though, he was adorable.

        Fantastic fantasy

Wonderfully written, with twists and turns most unexpected. The story seamlessly moves between the points of view of the two main characters, who depict you deeply into their story. Each book ends on a bewilderment, and then you want the complete set to get to the final satisfying decision.

Excellent fantasy series. I merely picked up this fantasy serial because it was offered as an inexpensive kindle deal, merely I'thou very glad that I did. Of the four books in the series, I constitute the "Magic Casement" to be the best of the lot, merely all of them held my attending, were quick reading and took unanticipated twists and turns. Recommended.

            Very good

An enjoyable fantasy romp. This addition could practise with better proof reading though, quite a lot of typos. Fun read, good characters, well paced. I will look for more books by the author.

                    Wow! Groovy story!

Fantastic storyline. I would love to hear the stories of Oothiana and Death Bird and what happened later on the wedding ceremony. Would make a corking HBO special.
